About CAEL

The Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) Test, measures the English language proficiency of students planning to study at Canadian universities and colleges.

CAEL is one of the best tools for identifying students with the right English skills for academic success. It provides an authentic representation of language use in a Canadian academic context. Test takers read articles, listen to a lecture, answer questions, and write a short essay, as they would be expected to do in a Canadian university or college classroom.

Evaluates test taker’s academic English speaking, reading, listening, and writing skills and is used for admission into Canadian post-secondary institutions and professional organizations.

Important Information

  • CAEL is a computer-based test of English. For best preparation student needs a Desktop or Laptop.
  • Recognized by Canadians Universities & Colleges.
  • There is one test for all 4 modules: Reading, Listening, Writing and speaking.
  • Results are available within 5 Business days.
  • The Duration of the test is 3.30 hours.
  • You need a Passport to book the exam.
  • There is a limitation of validity, however, CAEL.ca will maintain the record for 2 years
  • CAEL Exam fee varies from country to country.

CAEL Test Format

Fully Computer Delivered

Take the fully computer-delivered CAEL test at home online or at one of our 40 + test centers or one can take test at proctored centre / environment

Total Test Time Is About 3.5 Hours

The test reports scores on four components-Speaking, Reading, Listening, and Writing.

Integrated Skills in All Components

Test takers complete a range of tasks. Some of these tasks will require test takers to use what they have read and listened to in order to answer a question in speaking or writing.

Each Test Does Include Unscored Items

Each test contains unscored items used for test development. These unscored items can be found anywhere within each test and will have the same format as the scored items. You will not be able to tell scored items from unscored items, so apply your best effort to the entire test.



CAEL total test time is about 3h30m and is done in one sitting

Speaking


7-10 minutes

  • Reply to on-screen prompts verbally

Academic Unit A


60-70 minutes

  • Answer comprehension questions and write a reply

Integrated Reading


35-50 minutes

  • Read passages and reply to questions

Academic Unit B


40-45 minutes

  • Answer comprehension questions and write a reply

Integrated Listening


25-35 minutes

  • Listen to passages and reply to questions
